The Eucharist, a sacrament of initiation, is one of the key practices that defines us as Catholic Christians. It is central to our beliefs and is the primary way we express our Faith and partake in the redemption Jesus Christ won for us by His death and resurrection. We believe that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist in body, blood, soul, and divinity.
"At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior Instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of his Body and Blood. This he did in order to perpetuate the sacrifce of the cross throughout the ages until he should come agian, and so to entrust to his beloved spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet 'in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.' " (CCC 1323)
When we partake in the Eucharist, we participate in Holy Communion. It is called this because when we recieve the Body and Blood of Christ, we join in communion with God and unity with our Catholic brothers and sisters. In this communion, we share fully in the divine life of the Holy Trinity.
Because we believe that the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, and therefore sacred, only those who have 1) made their First Communion in a Catholic Church and 2) are not in a state of serious sin should recieve Holy Communion. (Guidelines for the Reception of Communion)
If you do not meet either of these criteria, we still encourage & welcome you to attend and participate in Mass without recieving the Eucharist.
Making your First Communion is an exciting and special time in the life of a Catholic! We will help you walk through the process as you prepare to receive the Blessed Sacrament for the first time.
If your child is of elementary school age, baptized Catholic and at least 7 years old...
He or she should complete the Faith Formation First Communion program. Contact Heather Marsh to begin this process.
If your child is baptized Catholic and between 7 and 18 years old...
He or she should complete the Sacrament Preparation Class. Contact Heather Marsh for more information and to begin the registration process.
If your child is older than 7 and has not been Baptised Catholic...
He or she should complete the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC). Contact Heather Marsh for more information.
If you are an adult....:
You should complete the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Contact Heather Marsh for more information.
